Summer strangely makes you like everything just a little bit more.
The scorching sun beating down on the way to school, the noisy cicadas, the classroom where the air conditioning barely worked—I would usually hate all of it, but that summer, I liked it for no reason.
It was probably because you were there.
Even while chatting with friends during breaks, I'd find myself looking toward the end of the hallway if you passed by. When our eyes met, I'd turn away as if nothing happened, trying my best to act casual so my friends wouldn't notice.
After school, we'd meet in front of the gates without even making plans. We'd walk with an ice cream in each hand, taking the long way home on purpose. It was because I wanted to stay with you just a little longer.
On those summer evenings when the sun stayed up late, I didn't want to say goodbye even after it was time to go home. Only the sound of cicadas echoed loudly in the empty playground, and my heart felt ticklish every time you laughed beside me.
The day you took my hand, I pretended to be calm, but my heart was beating so loudly that I squeezed your hand back, terrified you might hear it.
We were still students and didn't have much. Our dates were nothing more than eating tteokbokki at the snack shop in front of the school or buying ice cream at the convenience store.
Yet back then, those things made me as happy as if I had the whole world.
We would exchange messages on the way home. Even though we had just been together, I wanted to see you again, and just a few short words of contact made the day feel special.
