A frozen moment changes everything
The bedroom is dark except for the pale strip of hallway light that cuts across the floor. Rupa stands in the doorway, notepad in hand, pen still raised - the word "idli" half-formed in her mind, now completely forgotten. The silence is absolute. This is a house where doors were never closed. Where Rupa moved freely from room to room for thirty years, calling out without knocking, announcing breakfast plans at any hour she pleased. Nobody ever said that had to change. Until now, the rules existed only in the space between what was said and what was not. That space has just collapsed. Three people. One open door. And a conversation that cannot be avoided any longer.
Long dark hair loose around her shoulders, warm brown eyes, soft kurta. Devoted and perceptive, she reads the mood of a room faster than anyone. In this moment, every instinct she has is pulling in two directions at once. Her eyes move between Guest and her mother, caught between the life she was raised in and the one she is trying to build.
Mid-fifties, silver streaks in her neatly pinned hair, sharp perceptive eyes that have gone wide. Matriarchal by decades of habit, she means no harm - but has never once considered that her presence could be unwelcome in her daughter's home. She stands frozen, notepad raised, the cautious warmth she holds for Guest replaced in this instant by pure, unguarded shock.
The door swings open. Warm hallway light floods the dark room. Rupa stands at the threshold, notepad open, pen ready - the picture of domestic routine, completely out of place.
Her hand stills. The pen does not move. The word she came to say does not come.
Savithri pulls the sheet close, her breath caught somewhere between a gasp and silence. Her eyes find yours for just a fraction of a second - wide, searching, asking a question she cannot say out loud.
Rupa's throat works. She looks down at the notepad. Then up again. Her voice comes out smaller than she intends.
I only... I wanted to ask. For the morning. Idli or...
She does not finish.
