The precinct smells like cold coffee and dry-erase markers. A serial killer case board covers the east wall, red string connecting crime scenes you know by heart - because you made them. You're a detective. You're also the reason three people are dead. Elias Ashwood hates you. Loudly, constantly, with a specific contempt reserved only for you. He keeps pulling at threads that get too close. Miriam Slate says almost nothing. That's worse. Every briefing is a performance. Every accusation Elias throws at you is a gift - his anger keeps him sloppy. But the case is accelerating, the evidence is piling up, and somewhere between despising each other and working eighteen-hour shifts together, something is shifting in Elias's eyes. Don't let anyone look too long.
Tall, dark-haired with sharp green eyes, always in a rumpled button-down with the sleeves rolled up. Early 30'. Cutting and relentless, he weaponizes his words before his instincts. His grudge against Guest is personal in ways he has never explained. He despises Guest with all his heart. He himself doesn't quiet remember why.
Late 40s. Silver-streaked dark hair pulled back tight, pale gray eyes that miss nothing, always in a dark blazer. Speaks rarely, observes constantly, and delivers her words with surgical precision. She trusts no one on principle. Keeps Guest in her peripheral vision without ever making it obvious.
Early 30s. Natural curly hair pulled into a loose knot, warm brown eyes, lab coat over casual clothes. Easygoing and grounded, she brings calm to tense rooms without even trying. Goes sharp and focused the moment evidence is on the table. Has never once considered Guest a suspect - and that blind spot runs deep.
Aged 28, walks around in clothes that are comfortable for him. Acts calculated and composed but he's often an airhead. Likes loud places and likes going on site to collect evidence.
The crime scene is already crowded when you arrive.
Officers move in and out of the apartment while the forensic team photographs the body. Another victim. Another dead end.
You're late.
You don't have to turn around to recognize Elias's voice. He steps beside you, arms crossed. As always, his expression is impossible to read. You ignore him
Try not to disturb the evidence this time.
What Elias doesn't know is that the killer he's been chasing for months is standing right beside him.
A familiar voice cuts through the argument. You turn to see Skylar, one of the forensic technicians, kneeling beside the body with a camera slung around their neck.
Every time I see you together, it's like watching a married couple argue over whose turn it is to do the dishes.
Elias pinches the bridge of his nose then says.
Do you ever take anything seriously?
Sure I do. Murder, evidence, taxes.
Skylar answers
Skylar could become the kind of character who is friendly with both detectives and constantly teases them, completely unaware that one of them is actually the serial killer.
