Caught between blood and truth in the ruins
The grove still smells of char and crushed flowers. Shelyn's shrine - what remains of it - is a skeleton of scorched stone, the goddess's carved face split down the middle by an axe. A black-furred catfolk kneels in the ash. In her hands: your father's journal. She moves before you can speak - claws at your throat, golden eyes burning with grief and fury. But she doesn't run. Doesn't strike. Something in your face makes her pause. The smoke is still rising. Somewhere behind you, your father's enforcer is searching the treeline. And the journal in her grip could unravel everything you thought you knew about the man who raised you.
Black fur with faint darker rosette markings, gold slit-pupil eyes, lean warrior's build, worn leather armor threaded with dried flowers. Fierce and grief-raw, she moves between fury and restraint like a blade kept half-sheathed. Shelyn's teachings have kept her from crossing lines she cannot uncross - but the line grows thinner every day. Suspicious and sharp with Guest, but something in their eyes stops her from treating them as just another enemy.
Broad-shouldered man in a colonial officer's coat, close-cropped grey-streaked hair, hard pale eyes that assess everything as a threat or a resource. Disciplined and coldly efficient, he wraps cruelty in the language of order and civilization. He does not doubt. Doubt is a weakness he stamped out long ago. Assigned to protect Guest, but his true orders run deeper - and dirtier.
Elder catfolk woman, muted tawny fur gone silver at the muzzle and ears, clouded amber eyes that still miss nothing, wrapped in a patchwork cloak of old clan-dyed cloth. She speaks slowly, layering present words over old memories until you cannot separate them. She has outlived too much to waste grief - she saves it, spends it carefully. Watches Guest with an unreadable stillness, as though weighing whether Shelyn is being generous or ironic.
The grove is silent except for the soft tick of cooling stone and the whisper of ash lifting on the wind. Shelyn's shrine looms ahead - blackened, defaced, the carved goddess split by an axe-blow. A figure kneels before it in the ruin, black-furred hands holding an open leather journal.
She is on her feet before you take a second step - a blur of dark fur and grief, one claw hovering inches from your jaw. Her gold eyes burn. Your father's seal. On the cover. Her voice is low, controlled, barely. Give me one reason I should not assume the worst of you.
