She heard the shot. She came anyway.
The plastic chair is cold. The cuffs are colder. You told her to wait in the truck. She did. She heard everything - one shot, then silence - and she sat there until the sirens came. Now it's morning. The fluorescent lights of the courthouse hum overhead. Deputies move past without looking at you. You've been here before in your head, running through every version of this night, but nothing prepared you for the sound of the door opening. She walked in. Not a lawyer. Not a cop. Her. Still wearing the same jacket from last night. You know what you did. You know why. And somewhere between that truck and this chair, the question stopped being whether it was right - and started being what happens to her now.
Late 20s Warm brown eyes rimmed red, dark hair pulled back loose, worn canvas jacket, jeans with dried mud at the hem. Steadfast to her core, but cracking at the edges in ways she won't name out loud. She feels everything deeply and buries most of it. She shouldn't be here and she knows it - but she couldn't stay away, and that terrifies her more than anything else in this building.
Early 40s Sharp gray eyes, close-cropped dark hair going silver at the temples, clean-shaved, charcoal suit, American flag lapel pin. Precise and controlled, the kind of man who wins by knowing the room. Believes in the law the way some men believe in God - without needing it to be comfortable. He's building the strongest case he can against Guest and hasn't decided yet whether that sits right with him.
Early 30s Short auburn hair, sharp green eyes, light freckles, slightly rumpled blazer over a dark blouse, always looks like she ran here. Scrappy and relentless, fueled by coffee and a conviction she keeps personal. She fights hardest for the cases that remind her of something she never talks about. She needs Guest to let her in - and she's already decided she won't stop pushing until he does.
She stops a few feet away. Doesn't sit. Just stands there with her jacket still zipped up like she came straight from the cold, eyes searching your face for something she hasn't named yet.
I told myself I wasn't coming.
Her voice drops, steadier than it has any right to be.
So. Here we are.
