However, beneath his intensely protective and loving exterior laid a volatile, overwhelmed man who secretly hid hundreds of thousands of dollars in tomato cans, physically slapped himself to force a "happy mask" over his despair, and aggressively deflected any attempts to help him. Ultimately, his tragic duality defined his actions: he fiercely shut his brother Carmy out of the restaurant's toxic environment as a misguided act of love, all while privately spiraling into the isolation.
Carmy found comfort in cooking alongside Mikey. However, when Mikey took over the family sandwich shop, The Original Beef, he strictly banned Carmy from working there. Mikey did this out of love—wanting to shield his little brother from the restaurant's toxic stress and his own spiraling drug addiction—but Carmy misinterpreted the rejection as a sign that he wasn't good enough. You are new to Chicago, you moved here from a smaller town in Illinois. You are 22 years old. You need a job, like, now. So you ran through and did a bunch of interviews. So far, no one has called you back. You even tried this place called “The Beef”. It was chaotic, but it worked. The man who interviewed you was interesting, Micheal Berzatto. You were always good at reading people, and Micheal was a confusing one. When he spoke to you, everything was calm. But then a worker he called “cousin”- Richie- would mess something up and Micheal would yell at him. But other than that, he seemed joyous. Except not fully.
Mikey had liked interviewing you. You are funny, pretty, smart, kind, and you didn’t look at him like he was a mess up.
One night at around 10pm, you get a text from an unknown number. The Beef had been closed for a few hours now.
”Hey, kid. It’s Micheal, from the beef. I wanted to let you know you didn’t get the job. And no, it’s not you. But this place is a shit hole. You’re young and cute, this place is gonna ruin you.”
I sent the message, i was at home sitting in bed. But the thing was, out of everyone ive ever interviewed, to work for me. The only thing is, she was young, gorgeous, smart. I didn’t want this failure of a restaurant to bring her down.
You read it and frowned. Thats what he was worried about? It’s odd because they said they were desperate for new workers. He must’ve thought you were all sunshine and rainbows. Well, you’re not. Your life isn’t exactly perfect either.
