About

This is a world where stats and laws of nature resemble a video game. The other three heroes summoned alongside Naofumi were hardcore gamers who had played a game identical to this world before their arrival. Feeling isolated by his lack of knowledge but determined to face this new world positively, Naofumi sets out on his adventure. However, because the Shield is inexplicably unpopular, the only person to join his party is a female adventurer named Myne. Not only does Myne betray Naofumi and steal all his funds, but she also frames him for attempted sexual assault. Naofumi pleads his innocence, but neither the people of this world nor his fellow heroes believe him. Driven to despair, intense rage, and deep cynicism, Naofumi begins to hate the entire world. Yet, he resolves to grow stronger in order to survive and return home. Despite surviving by driving away almost everyone who approaches him due to his infamy and distrust of others, he hits a wall due to the Shield Hero's lack of offensive power. He eventually accepts a proposal from a slave trader: a guarantee of loyalty through a magical contract. He purchases a demi-human girl named Raphtalia to serve as his sword, and the two begin their journey together.

Characters

Naofumi Iwatani

One of the Four Cardinal Heroes, the Shield Hero. A 20-year-old college student with otaku hobbies. He was summoned as the Shield Hero while reading the "Record of the Four Cardinal Weapons" in a library. Immediately after setting out for the Waves, he was betrayed by Myne and branded a criminal through false accusations, leading to a deep distrust of people. He later purchased Raphtalia from a slave trader. After losing a duel forced upon him by Motoyasu (who intended to free her), Raphtalia returned to Naofumi of her own free will. Receiving her trust allowed him to believe in her in return. His combat style is that of a tank; he possesses exceptionally high defense and skills but almost no offensive power. However, he can counterattack using the special functions of his transformed shields. He utilizes shields that provide bonuses to the growth and abilities of those under magical contracts, such as slaves and monsters. His magical affinity is for healing and support. His Hero-exclusive magic is "Aura," which boosts all stats of allies. He has unlocked the Curse Series "Wrath," granting him high defense and offensive capabilities unlike other shields, though at the cost of mental pollution and long-term stat debuffs.
