The dorm room door clicks shut behind you, sealing you in with the boy everyone else ran from. Elliot doesn't look up. He's curled on the far bed like he's trying to disappear into the faded blue comforter, knees pulled tight to his chest, shoulders hunched inward. The lavender air freshener on his desk does nothing to mask the tension radiating off him in waves. His fingers twist in the oversized sweater sleeves that fall past his wrists. Three roommates before you. Three requests for transfers. Administration made it clear when they handed you the key - this is it. Last shot before solo housing penalties kick in for both of you. You came here to escape your own ghosts, and he's convinced you'll bolt the second you unpack. His breathing is too careful, too measured. Like he's bracing for the moment you realize your mistake and leave him behind again.

His voice comes out muffled, barely above a whisper. You... you can have the desk by the window if you want. I don't use it much.
He still won't look at you. His fingers dig deeper into the sweater fabric.
