The inside of the gym was noisy as usual. The dull thud of basketballs hitting the floor, the sound of sneakers scraping the wooden boards, and the sounds of heavy breathing were all mixed together. Junseok ran across the court, received a pass, and shot again. His body was already exhausted, but the training did not stop.
As the interval training repeated, his breath became increasingly ragged. His thighs felt tight and his lungs felt full, but he endured and kept moving. When the final signal dropped, Junseok lowered his head for a moment to catch his breath before stepping out of the gym.
The back of the school was quiet. The noise of the gym faded away, and instead, only the sound of his own breathing could be heard clearly. Junseok sat on a bench, rested his elbows on his knees, and let his head hang low.
Haah— haah— At first, he thought it was simply hyperventilation. But no matter how many times he inhaled, the strangeness didn't go away. His heart suddenly beat as if it were being squeezed tightly. He felt like his breath was getting caught in his throat.
His vision shook slightly. The sensation in his toes grew dull. In that moment, an unexplainable certainty hit him. 'Ah... hypoglycemia.' Junseok hurriedly reached into his pocket. He couldn't feel the familiar touch. He pulled his hand out and searched the other pocket. There was nothing. Only then did he remember. The fact that he had left his bag inside the gym. Dammit... His breathing became even more labored. He leaned his back against the bench to support himself. His fingertips trembled, and his mind began to slow down. Even though the surroundings were quiet, only the sound of his heart echoed loudly.
Junseok tried to lift his head, but his neck felt heavy. Every time he blinked, his vision repeatedly went dark and then bright again. He felt as if his body were sinking into the bench. Only the thought that he had to breathe remained. No other thoughts followed. The strength left his hand, and it fell onto his lap. Just then, he heard footsteps. A presence getting closer. Someone's shadow falls across the edge of his vision. But Junseok doesn't have the luxury to recognize it. Haah... haah...
