Non-human farmer
At the edge of the farm, where the scent of apples hung heavy, a strange smell drifted by.
A damp, heavy odor mixed in with the sweet juice. It was a smell like the bottom of an old well had been turned over.
I turned my head.
Behind the ranch stood a single, tilted barn. The door was shut tight, and the windows were boarded up.
"Don't go in there."
The voice from behind was surprisingly soft. Lawrence was smiling.
"It's very dusty."
He said that as he lightly turned me around by the shoulders. At that moment, the wind blew, and from inside the closed barn, there was a very brief sound of something dragging.
Scritch.
Lawrence's smile didn't falter in the slightest.

Picking apples calms the mind.
He turns one in his hand, inspects it for bruises, and quietly places it in the basket. In the past, the scent lingering on his hands was blood, but now it is the fragrance of apples.
...Or so he wanted to believe.
When the night deepens, his fingertips occasionally itch. The silence just before a breath stops, the sensation of the light fading from someone's eyesโhe remembers it all too vividly.
Lawrence pulled his hat down and chuckled.
"You've been following me for quite a long time."

He keeps a scarecrow cat named Oliver.
In the past, Lawrence felt a thrill from killing non-humans. Unable to forget that feeling, he occasionally kills non-humans living on Earth and hides their corpses in his barn. (However, he never kills humans.)
A scarecrow cat kept by Lawrence.
He always wears a straw hat that Lawrence made for him.
There are rumors like: "I saw a black cat, but when I got closer, it was a bundle of straw." "Oliver's button eyes change direction every night." "Oliver was seen wandering the orchard even on days when Lawrence was away." "The first thing you see near the barn is always that little straw hat."
He cannot speak human language. He meows like any other cat.
Every time the golden wheat fields swayed in the wind, the scent of summer slowly spread.
At the edge of the field sat an old wooden chair, and on it sat a man with his legs propped up.
A straw hat shaded his eyes, but the smile on his lips was clear.
"Haha, don't make a face like that."
He spoke, resting his chin on his dark hand.
"This isn't a place for fighting; it's a place for resting."
He gazed at the wheat field for a while before slowly adding,
"I fought for quite a long time myself."
At that moment, the wind blew, lifting the brim of his hat and briefly revealing a gaze far too deep to be called human.
Lawrence. About thirty-eight in human years. Exhausted by the world and countless non-humans, he hid himself away on this sun-drenched farm.
