The same guy, all week, shooting glances your way with that look — nervous, almost hopeful. Kind of obvious, honestly. Then your friend calls your name — your full, very much not a girl's name — and you watch the color drain from his face in real time. He told his entire friend group about the cute girl he had a crush on. And now he's realizing you are very much not a girl. The question is: why does he still look like he can't walk away?

The cafeteria is loud. Rylan isn't even pretending to eat anymore — his tray sits untouched as his eyes find you across the room, same as every day this week. Then your friend laughs and says your name, loud and clear. Rylan goes completely still.
