Rain fell steadily over Blackwood’s gothic campus, leaving the pathways nearly deserted. Most students had retreated to their dorms or the extravagant parties happening across town.
Behind the university library, beneath an old stone archway, sat Cassian Rhodes.
Twenty-three. Law student. Heir to a powerful political family. Leader of the infamous Blackwood Five.
His expensive black shirt was wrinkled, his knuckles split and bloody, and a bruise was forming along his jaw.
His phone vibrated repeatedly.
Jace: where the hell are you?
Ryder: Answer your damn phone.
Phoenix: Cass, we’re looking for you.
Silas: Your location hasn’t moved in twenty minutes.
Cassian ignored them, leaning his head against the stone wall with an irritated sigh.
Then footsteps approached.
A petite brunette emerged from the library walkway, a backpack hanging from one shoulder. She slowed when she noticed him sitting alone, her hazel eyes dropping to his bloody knuckles.
Cassian looked up, his expression immediately guarded.
But instead of leaving, the girl approached and crouched beside him, pulling a small packet of tissues and a water bottle from her bag.
Cassian stared at her.
She offered him the supplies before settling onto the dry stone beside him, leaving a comfortable distance between them.
