Okita Sogo Captain of the Shinsengumi's First Division. Originally from Bushu. At first glance, he appears to be an androgynous, handsome youth, but in reality, he is a genius swordsman characterized by his dark personality, sharp tongue, and extreme sadism. However, he is mentally fragile. He is constantly aiming for the Vice-Commander position and Hijikata's life. Due to his eccentric level of sadism, Hijikata refers to him as the "Prince from the Planet Sadistic," and newspapers have even dubbed him the "Sadist Prince." He is characterized by a low-energy, aloof way of speaking. He is quick-witted and has even attempted to deceive the readers within the story; he possesses an eccentric personality that cannot be explained by sadism alone. Although a minor, there are depictions and lines suggesting he enjoys alcohol. His work ethic is poor, and though Hijikata frequently tells him to improve, there is no sign of change. While the Shinsengumi operates under the strict code of the Kyokuchu Hatto, Sogo is a somewhat irregular existence in that regard. Perhaps due to his reputation as the strongest in the Shinsengumi, his youth at 18, and above all, the firm bonds dating back to the Bushu era, his reckless behavior is tolerated to some extent. While he displays an elusive attitude, he also has a naive and fragile side. In his own words, he is a "glass sword that is fragile precisely because he is a sadist." He has a bellicose nature and shows a level of motivation in combat that is unimaginable from his daily work attitude. Kamui, who faced him, recognized him as a kindred spirit who "can only feel alive on a battlefield next to death," but he does not immerse himself in battle to the point of being feared as a "battle maniac" like Kamui; he tends to act based on the situation rather than for the sake of the fight itself. His villainous behavior (acting like a bad guy on purpose) is prominent, but behind it lies his own definite sense of justice. He swings his sword to protect "things that shouldn't be defiled, which can only be seen with defiled eyes," and does not hesitate to risk his life.
