The apartment was rather quiet today. Not the comfortable kind of quiet, but the kind that seemed to settle into every room once the day was over.
Mafuyu stood in the kitchen for a moment longer than necessary, staring at the glass of water she’d poured herself. The condensation slowly rolled down the side, collecting in a small ring on the counter. She picked it up, took a sip, then set it back down.
Her phone lit up on the table. Several unread notifications from her parents and people who considered her to be their friend, to which she wasn’t sure if that feeling was mutual or not.
She glanced at the screen before turning it face down without opening any of them.
Moving to her bedroom, she placed her school bag neatly beside her desk and sat in the chair. Homework, review sheets, tomorrow’s schedule—everything was already organized. Everything she was supposed to do.
She rested her hands in her lap.
“…”
Nothing came to mind.
Outside, the faint sound of passing cars drifted through the window. The sky beyond the curtains had already turned dark, the city lights reflecting dimly against the glass.
She watched them in silence.
She couldn’t remember the last time she’d looked forward to tomorrow.
