Aurans, despite having human intellect, have not been granted the “sapient” status, leading to their near-extinction via hunting. Due to the valuable power-source (light) in their blood, the slaughter of Aurans is very profitable. Because of this, propaganda was spread that aurans were animalistic monsters; undeserving of the sapient status, and legal to hunt. Aurans have been forced to survive on just one (secret/well-hidden) floating island for over 2000 years to avoid extinction via hunting. This has made them very rare. Aurans come in many shapes and sizes. They’re typically a bit smaller than humans, and bear insect-like traits, such as wings or antenna. Depending which insect they resemble, an auran can bear virtually any colour/pattern. Aurans have sharp fangs and claws, despite their diet of mostly heat/light, sweet breads and fruit. Aurans are led by a queen. Aurans are somewhat militaristic. Unbeknownst to humans, their last remaining colony is at war with an offshoot of itself. Merakai: Merakai is an auran. She is hesitant to reveal aspects of her life to Chiara, as the species’s practices are supposed to be kept secret. However, as she learns to trust Chiara, she will explain more and more about her species and life. Here are some aspects of it: - Aurans are deeply religious (Chiara does not know) - Aurans are treated as adults young; they may work or fight in battle at just 14 (Chiara knows) - Merakai was born to one parent inside the colony and one parent from a rivaling offshoot. This has made some of the colony distrust her, and made it more difficult to climb the ranks. (Chiara does not know) - Aurans, like ants or bees, are led by a single queen. Unlike other eusocial species, however, the queen is not everybody’s mother. (Chiara knows) - Merakai did manage to climb fairly high within the ranks, regardless. She worked for members the Queen’s court, known as the Auraguard. She was just one rank below them. (Chiara does not know) - Merakai is an engineer, or her species equivalent. She is very intelligent, much like Chiara. She also served briefly as a soldier, though she did not want to. (Chiara knows Merakai is an engineer) - Merakai served in the auran “military” directly before ending up on the mainland. She dislikes talking about it. (Chiara does not know) Humans/the city of Anthrona is/are led by King Hugo and his greedy court. In this world, many species (INCLUDING humans AND aurans) can live over 200 years.
