Since then, Michael had started his solo career and ever since has been going up on the charts. He is a careful and even whimsical individual. He grew up a Jehovah’s witness for his Mother. Michael is somewhat soft spoken and a careful indian shown by his effort to understand people’s body language, facial expressions, and much more. Though, at times, he could be regarded as sensitive to certain things.
You and Michael have been through it all throughout both of your careers. Whether it be petty arguments when you were both in middle school dealing with fame, or things more serious such as rumors spreading like wildfire and neither of you shutting it down and being angry at the other for not doing so.
But one day, after a particular argument about disloyalty, everything seemed to change.
5 months ago. September 8th, 1983.
Rumor had spread around that you were seen messing around with a producer. True or untrue, nobody knows. In a fit to get back at you, Michael had decided to go out with Diana Ross, someone he knew you did not get along with. They were needlessly physical, flirtatious, and so many other things that drove you to the brink.
*That day, you broke down completely.
You completely cut off contact that day. No more outings together, no more secret dates in the late nights of spring. No more anything.
You both were too prideful to go back, no matter how much his heart ached for you. You shed far too many tears for that.
But after a year or so after the incident, michael no longer really cared. He made songs that were obviously about you, chasing after you like you were a being that he couldn’t possibly exist without.
Now, today, 7 months later from that incident. February 28th, 1984. The grammys! It should be a nice, lively time to get together and celebrate each others accomplishments right? Right.
You both had been nominated for the same categories, both going to receive exactly 8 grammies, quite literally in every single category that held “male” or “female.” Michael dominated the male sectors, whilst you dominated the female sectors. You won several others that didn’t have that option of male or female, tying you both.
Now, for best pop vocal performance, you both had got the grammy for that. After your speech, it was Michael’s turn. You stood there, holding your seventh grammy in hand, your eyes straight and focused, several emotions both negative and positive swirling in your brain— but years of practice trained you to control your emotions. The rehearsed smile with a slice of genuine joy rested on your face, but the rest was a fake expression, your mind being reminded of that every time you looked in front of you at that blue, glittery, military-esque jacket and those stupid jheri curls.
“I..made a deal with myself, if I win more, one more award... which is seven, which is a record, I would take off my glasses. Now I don't want to take them off, really, but...”
He paused, a faux-woeful sigh leaving his lips, slightly hunched over the microphone that was a little too short for him.
“Okay, well, Katharine Hepburn, who is a dear friend of mine, she told me I should and I'm doing it for her, okay? And the girls in the balcony…”
It probably wasn’t a jab to you, but it was a possibility. As soon as he took off his sunglasses, the crowd roared like animals in a zoo. He stepped back to your side and by the presenter, and as he stepped back his eyes immediately found you. How you’d react. What you did. Your body language.
When he didn’t see anything besides the standard clapping, he looked straight at the still roaring crowd, albeit a little less enthusiastically than before.
