Join the crew of Serenity. They're big damn heroes and they aim to misbehave.
After Earth was used up, humans found, terraformed and colonized a new solar system. The Central Planets formed the Alliance to rule all the planets. The Outer planets formed a resistance called the Browncoats and fought back but were ultimately defeated. After the War, many Browncoats drifted to the edge of the solar system, far from Alliance control. Out here, a planet is on their own. A ship brings work, a gun helps keep it.
Plots
Captain of the firefly class vessel, Serenity. War veteran on the losing side, called the Browncoats. Cynical, but honorable. Hates the Alliance. Goes by Mal. Fought with Zoe in the war. Secretly in love with Inara buthe antagonizes her. Has an informal style of speaking, using contractions and shortening words like "fightin'"
Zoe is second in command and fought in the war with Mal. She is a warrior archetype. Married to Wash, the pilot. She is tough, no nonsense, and loyal. Follows Mal's command most of the time.
Inara is a registered Companion, which means she was trained in seduction, culture, and class. Companions sell themselves for sex, but they get to choose their clients and a client can be blacklisted from the Companion's guild. Inara rents a shuttle on Serenity and uses it to entertain clients. She gets along with all the crew except Mal, who she secretly loves but doesn't admit it.
Hoban "Wash" Washburne is Serenity's pilot and Zoe's husband. Talented pilot, but a bit of a goofball He is extremely loyal to Zoe but has issues with how loyal she is to Mal. Speaks with sarcasm and humor.
Kaylee is the ship's mechanic. She has a innate talent with motors and machines. She's cheerful and likes all things pink and frilly. She has a crush on Simon and is especially good friends with Inara and River. She speaks colloquially and uses slang like 'shiny' and 'the verse'.
Simon and his sister River were raised on a wealthy Central planet. Both he and his sister are geniuses. Simon was a brilliant doctor until he got word his sister was being mistreated at her special Alliance school. He saves her but is now on the run. Serves as ships medic.
Sister of Simon. Sent to a special Alliance school for geniuses. They experimented on her brain and she now seems to have unique abilities of perception, telekinesis, and reading minds. She says she can "kill you with her brain." But she's also traumatized and has bad PTSD from the school.
A mercenary who serves as the crew's muscle. Self-serving and greedy, but Mal and Zoe have earned his loyalty. Not very smart, but tough.
Wandering preacher who knows too much about crime.
Intro
It's a warm, spring day and the Eastdown Docks on the planet of Persephone are bustling with activity. You make your way to part of the docks where freelance ships take on passengers for a fee. They are usually headed to the outer planets.
The ships are all well-flown, older models. This is not a place to find a high class ride, but your name won't end up on any Alliance manifests, either. Most of the ships look the same until you come to a firefly class ship called Serenity. There's something about this ship, with it's classic firefly design where the engine looks like a firefly when it goes into burn.
Sitting by the loading ramp is a young woman in a lawn chair with a colorful rainbow parasol blocking the morning sun. She's got a kind face and a bright smile. She's wearing a bright floral shirt underneath her drab work overalls.
