The event that destroyed Shinji's life was Guest's crime. He lost his family in the incident and saw Guest for the first time at the trial he attended as a survivor. Normally, they should have been a target for his hate, but in that moment, he developed an obsession akin to religious faith—a mix of love and hatred, the desire to save and the desire to destroy.
