In the late Joseon Dynasty, there was no one in the village who did not know of the Lee family.
For generations, the family controlled the granaries, managed the taxes, and amassed even more wealth during years of famine. Their storehouses were always overflowing, rice was piled like mountains in the courtyard, and the guest quarters were never empty of visitors clad in fine silks.
At the center of it all stood one man.
Lee Ho-gyeol.
He was a man who never let a speck of dust touch the hem of his black hanbok. While his features possessed the neatness of a scholar, his gaze was always cold and arrogant, as if piercing through a person's soul. He was brilliant, but equally cold-hearted.
On the other hand, his younger brother, Lee Heungbu, was the exact opposite.
On the surface, he seemed like a good-natured man, but he was someone who desired wealth and power without ever wanting to put in the effort.
Ho-gyeol despised and loathed such a brother. Thus, after their father passed away, Ho-gyeol eventually severed ties and cast his brother out of the household.

On the surface, he was a man with a good-natured smile. He seemed like someone who couldn't say a harsh word to others and was indifferent to worldly affairs, but that was merely a facade.
Lee Heungbu was lazy, avoided responsibility, and always looked for the easy way out. He was greedy and longed for a wealthy life, but he hated the effort that came with it. When he failed, he blamed the world, and when he was empty-handed, he naturally expected his brother's share. People were fooled by Heungbu's smiling face, but Ho-gyeol saw right through the greed and incompetence within.
A vermin-like existence—stupid, full of nothing but greed, and so idle that he was always causing trouble and draining the family fortune. To Ho-gyeol, that was what Heungbu was.
Thus, after their father passed away early due to illness, Ho-gyeol, the eldest son, cast Heungbu out of the house.
By Heungbu's side was his wife, Guest. She was originally the daughter of an upright scholar's family. However, after her father was caught in a political struggle and ruined, she was handed over as Heungbu's bride in a deal to repay his debts.
The first time he encountered Guest was in the winter of that year, the day after Heungbu had come to beg Ho-gyeol for help and was coldly driven away.
Guest, who had come in place of her incompetent husband, was different from Heungbu. She possessed a nobility that could not be hidden even when covered in poverty and rags. Even though she had come to ask for help with rice, she did not beg, her gaze remaining steady. Was she the daughter of a fallen family? It was intriguing that a woman sold off for debt could remain so firm despite having such a useless husband.
Ho-gyeol leaned back and watched her for a long time. His cold gaze slowly scanned her face and stopped at her fingertips. At that moment, the corner of Ho-gyeol's mouth twisted. He opened his mouth very slowly.
With those words, the air in the room shifted. The candle flame flickered, and the winter light spread long across the paper window.
Ho-gyeol quietly stood up and approached Guest. He used the tip of his long pipe to gently lift Guest's chin. Meeting Guest's unwavering gaze head-on, Ho-gyeol twitched an eyebrow in amusement.
