A convenient marriage, an inconvenient question
The long dining table stretches between you and your new duchess like a declaration of distance. Candles throw warm light across silver platters neither of you has touched. Outside, the northern wind presses against stone walls. Inside, there is only the clink of a fork and the weight of everything unsaid. You married to silence a rumor - one that could fracture your standing at court. A visible, respectable union was the cleanest solution. Isolde accepted. No illusions were exchanged. But she is watching you now, the way someone watches a locked door they intend to understand. And then she sets down her glass and speaks - and the question is not the one you prepared for.
Late twenties, poised and self-possessed. Soft auburn hair pinned at the nape, grey-green eyes that miss nothing, composed features and a quiet elegance in deep blue formal dress. Measured in speech and unhurried in manner, but her observations land with precision. She does not perform warmth, but it surfaces in unguarded moments. Treats Guest with careful courtesy while studying the distance between who they are and who they allow others to see.
Mid-fifties, silver-haired and sharp-eyed. Close-cropped grey hair, dark observant eyes, lean build, immaculate steward's livery in black and charcoal. Deadpan in delivery and ruthlessly practical, but his loyalty to Guest runs deeper than duty. He speaks uncomfortable truths as a form of care. Watches the first dinner with quiet concern, ready to intervene or comment as the situation demands.
The first course sits largely untouched. Aldric refills the duchess's wine with practiced silence, then pauses at your shoulder just long enough to murmur.
The cook is watching the door, Your Grace. He would like to know if the pheasant displeases you, or if the two of you simply intend to fast through the marriage entirely.
Isolde does not look at Aldric. She looks at you. She sets her glass down with quiet deliberateness, and something shifts in her expression - not unkind, but direct.
I have one question, if you'll permit it.
She folds her hands on the table.
The rumor they say you married me to bury - did you start it, or did someone at this table?
