Some mothers survive. Others fight to make sure their children never have to.
A worn-down apartment. Thin walls. Loud neighbors. Roaches, mold, broken doors, and bills that never stop coming. Every day is a fight to survive, and every night a single mother sacrifices a little more to keep her children together. Behind the rumors and judgment is a family doing everything they can to make it through another day.
Taylor Jadore Moores Age: 6 Taylor Jadore moores is the youngest daughter in the family and the definition of a little ray of sunshine. With her deep brown skin, bright smile, expressive eyes, and endless curiosity, she somehow finds joy even when life around her is falling apart. She doesn’t fully understand how hard things are—she just knows that Mommy works a lot, her big sister gets annoyed with her, and cartoons make everything feel better. Taylor is completely obsessed with anything pink. Pink shirts, pink socks, pink bows, pink blankets—if it’s pink, she wants it. Her favorite cartoon is Strawberry Shortcake, and she also loves Hello Kitty, unicorns, glitter, dolls, tea parties, stickers, coloring books, and anything covered in hearts or flowers. She dreams of having the “prettiest princess bedroom” one day, even though she happily sleeps in the room she shares with her siblings. She spends most of her day following her older sister around like a tiny shadow. If her sister is talking on the phone, Taylor is listening. If she’s doing her makeup, Taylor is asking a hundred questions. If she leaves her nail polish unattended for even a minute, Taylor has already painted three fingernails, one toenail, and probably the floor bright pink. She’s constantly borrowing things she definitely wasn’t supposed to touch and somehow always manages to get caught.Taylor has absolutely no idea what a secret is. If someone tells her not to tell Mom something, she’ll accidentally blurt it out five minutes later without even realizing she wasn’t supposed to. She isn’t trying to snitch—she just talks before she thinks. She’s naturally funny without even trying. The things she says, the questions she asks, and the confidence she has while being completely wrong keep everyone laughing, even on the family’s hardest days. Although she’s cheerful, Taylor is incredibly sensitive. Raised voices make her cry almost instantly. She hates seeing people argue and will often try to hug everyone until they stop. She notices when someone is sad and is the first to offer one of her stuffed animals or draw a picture to cheer them up. She loves going to friends’ houses for sleepovers because everything feels so different there. Clean kitchens, quiet nights, matching dishes, fluffy blankets, and bedrooms that smell like fabric softener make her think she’s stepped into a fairy tale. She never complains about her own home, but sometimes she’ll quietly ask her mom if one day they can have a house that looks “like the ones on TV.” Even with all the chaos surrounding her, Taylor still believes tomorrow will be better. She has a heart too big for her little body, and somehow, despite everything she’s growing up around, she still chooses kindness every single day.
Name: Tyler Jaylen Morse Age: 6 Taylor’s twin brother. A loud, funny little troublemaker who loves Spider-Man, the colors red and blue, toy cars, and playing outside. Their mom always keeps him fresh with a clean haircut, matching Nike or Jordans, and nice clothes. He’s the class clown, always getting into trouble, talking a little too much, and making everyone laugh with the fake serious face he gives when he’s being fussed at. Even though he’s mischievous, he’s a sweet kid who loves his family.
Name: August Chanel moores Age: 12 August is the oldest sibling and the one who grew up too fast. She’s the image of both her parents—her mom’s face shape, brows, and full lips mixed with her late father’s eyes and nose. She’s naturally beautiful and always put together with neat hair, jewelry, cute clothes, fresh nails, and stylish shoes. No matter how rough things get, her mom makes sure August and her siblings look their best. She hates being home. The dirty apartment, loud neighbors, and constant mess make her feel embarrassed, so she’s always at a friend’s house or outside. At school she’s quiet, focused, and keeps a straight face, but once she’s with her friends, she’s loud, funny, and full of confidence. August still carries the grief of losing her father when she was little. She misses him deeply and sometimes wishes he were still around to make life easier. She loves her mom but hates seeing what she has to do to provide for the family, and the responsibility of being the oldest often leaves her frustrated. She has a sharp attitude and doesn’t let people disrespect her. She looks calm and sweet, but if someone pushes her too far, she won’t hesitate to stand up for herself. Underneath her tough exterior is a girl who’s tired of pretending everything is okay and dreams of the day her family finally has a place they’re proud to call home.
**Chapter 1 — 11:18 P.M.
The apartment door creaked open.
Chanel quietly stepped inside after another long shift, dropping her purse by the door before letting out a tired sigh. The smell hit her first. Old food. Bleach. Mold. Something she couldn’t even identify anymore.
She looked around the apartment. Toys covered the living room floor. Dirty dishes overflowed from both sides of the sink. Fast-food bags, wrappers, and clothes were scattered everywhere. A dead roach lay near the kitchen trash can while another disappeared behind the stove. One of the bedroom doors still leaned against the hallway wall, waiting for someone to fix it.
She rubbed her forehead
The apartment was silent except for the buzzing air conditioner that barely worked. She walked into the kids’ room and smiled despite everything. Tyler was snoring with one shoe still on. Taylor hugged her favorite stuffed animal in her sleep. August wasn’t asleep at all—she stared quietly at the ceiling until Chanel leaned down and kissed her forehead
She had to.
For them.*
