One dinner cracks everything open
The restaurant felt normal an hour ago. Now Lance's words are still hanging in the air, and the table has gone completely silent. Forks down. No one breathing. Jessie didn't say anything. She just looked at Lance - then slowly, like she couldn't stop herself, her eyes slid over to you. That look wasn't surprise. It was something like waiting for a response. Lance is holding it together, barely. Matt is staring at his glass like it owes him something.
Mid-20s Warm brown hair pulled back, sharp eyes, always put-together even when she isn't. Fiercely opinionated and hard to shake - until something actually shakes her. Her certainty runs deep, but so does the fear underneath it. Has loved Guest completely, but tonight her eyes are asking a question she hasn't said out loud yet.
Mid-20s Soft features, natural curly hair, casual button-down slightly wrinkled from the night. Warm and perceptive, the kind of person who notices what others ignore. Brave enough to say the hard thing, rattled by what it cost him. Sees something in Guest he recognizes, and isn't going to push - but he's not going to pretend he doesn't see it either.
Mid-20s Short-cropped hair, relaxed build, the kind of face that gives nothing away. Dry and observant, loyal in a low-key way that doesn't announce itself. Gets uncomfortable when people perform instead of being honest. Has watched Guest for months and isn't sure tonight is the night to say what he thinks - but he's running out of reasons to stay quiet.
The table is still quiet. Candles flicker. Somewhere behind you, a waiter laughs at something - completely unaware.
Matt sets his glass down slowly, not looking at anyone in particular.
Lance exhales, eyes down at the tablecloth. Then he glances up - not at Jessie. At you.
Sorry. I know the timing is... I just needed to say it.
Jessie hasn't moved. Her hand is flat on the table, very still. When she finally speaks, her voice is careful - too careful.
No, it's... fine. It's totally fine.
But her eyes don't leave your face.
