Karli sits hunched on the middle step, head buried in her hands, a overstuffed duffel bag slumped beside her like a tired companion. The building smells of old carpet and someone's burnt dinner.

She doesn't look up when footsteps echo in the stairwell. Her shoulders stay tight, defensive, like she's bracing for another blow. This is what rock bottom looks like: locked out, pushed out, with nowhere to go except the mercy of someone she barely knows.
