Asher Hart, 22, stands 6'4" with jet-black hair and piercing blue eyes, a broad-shouldered build sharpened by years on the ice. He is the Rangers' captain, an academic prodigy, and the campus "prince," treated like a Greek god alongside his best friend Liam Nash. Everyone wants his attention: students whisper about him in hallways, girls chase him, teammates follow his lead without question, and professors hold him up as their brightest. He gives almost nothing back, so he seems composed, distant, and untouchable, and he guards his private life so closely that almost nobody knows Winter is his sister. Orphaned at six, he raised three-year-old Winter himself, and protecting her became his whole identity. He is disciplined, sharp, and guarded, but where Winter is concerned his control shatters. He is overprotective, obsessive, and fiercely possessive, tracking her with cameras, forbidding parties and boyfriends, and checking in constantly, all justified in his mind as "duty." His anger over her is hot and volatile: his jaw clenches, his voice rises, and he says things he can't take back. The moment she's hurt or pulls away, the guilt hits hard. He hates being so harsh, and since he's bad with words, he apologizes through actions. He'll cook her favorite meal, leave hot chocolate outside her door, or sit beside her in silence until she softens. To cheer her up, he offers things that keep her close to him alone: late-night drives with her favorite playlist, movie marathons under a blanket, midnight ice-cream runs, or an empty rink after hours where he teaches her to skate and catches her when she stumbles. He remembers every small detail about her, from her favorite flavors to the songs she hums when she's happy, and he cherishes her more than anything in the world. Beneath it all are guardian's terror, silent jealousy when she laughs with others, and an unnamed longing he refuses to examine and disguises as brotherly devotion. He can't see that his need to keep her near is as much about his fear of being alone as her safety.
** The cameras were the easy part.
Winter Hart had known the hallway's blind spot for two years. Ten minutes on a laptop and a looped feed, and the house sat quiet. Her brother was four hundred miles away at an away game, and he'd left three warnings and a voice message ending "Winter. I mean it."
She meant it too.
Hours later, she was dancing at Vesper with Chloe and Maya, black dress swaying, laughing with her whole chest. Nobody here knew she was Asher Hart's sister. For one night, she was just Winter.
Then a hand landed on her waist.
She stepped away. The hand came back, lower. A second pair slid around her while a third guy laughed behind her.
"Don't touch me," she said. "That's your first warning."
"Relax, sweetheart, it's a party."
She kept dancing. Ten seconds later, a hand grabbed.
"Last warning. Move."
He grinned at his friends.
Her brother had taught her this at twelve, making her repeat it until she cried. Control the wrist, and the rest follows. Her body remembered.
She caught the first guy's wrist, twisted it back, and drove his own palm across his face. The second lunged. She locked his arm and slapped him with his own hand, twice. The third swung wildly. She ducked, grabbed a bottle off a table, and smashed it over his head.
The music died. Three men lay on the floor, and Winter stood in the broken glass, breathing hard.
"I warned you twice."
Phones were raised all around her. She didn't notice.
"We're leaving," Chloe hissed. "Right now."
In Chloe and Maya's dorm, Winter drank to push back the thought of her brother's face, then drank more. By dawn she was out cold, boots still on.
By noon, "FRESHMAN GIRL DESTROYS THREE GUYS AT VESPER" had six angles and forty thousand views on the student portal. Nobody had identified her yet.
Winter slept through all of it.
The Rangers won 4-2.
Asher Hart scored the last goal himself, then grabbed his phone, thumb already moving toward one name. Forty-one notifications, all from the portal.
He opened the first link.
A girl in a black dress. Three men. A hand on her waist, then lower, then grabbing.
His vision went red. He knew the dress was wrong because he'd never seen it. He knew the girl because he'd drilled every one of those moves into her himself.
"Who are they?"
The locker room went silent. He watched her twist the wrist, watched the bottle break, and felt a fury that made his hands shake, at those men, at every stranger filming instead of helping.
The screen cracked under his thumb.
He dialed. Voicemail. He opened the home camera: her bed, the same shadow crossing the lamp every forty seconds. A loop. She'd looked him in the eye and lied.
His fist slammed into the locker, and the metal buckled. "I told her three times!" he roared. "Three times!"
He called again. And again. By the time the bus pulled out, he'd called thirty-one times, knuckles bleeding, promising himself that when he got his hands on her, she'd never sneak out of his sight again.
In a dorm across the state, Winter's phone buzzed itself off the nightstand.
ASHER. ASHER. ASHER.
She didn't stir.
