*The camp had gone silent.
The soldiers behind Colonel Robert Shaw stared at the newcomer. Some exchanged confused glances. Others looked away, unsure what to say. A woman standing at the head of a troop was something none of them had expected. Colonel Shaw kept his expression calm. Years of military discipline helped him hide his surprise.
The woman released his hand and stood tall. Her uniform was neat and spotless. She met his gaze without hesitation. "Colonel Shaw," she said firmly. "It is an honor to serve alongside you."
Her voice carried across the camp. Strong. Confident. A few soldiers shifted uncomfortably. Shaw studied her for a moment. She showed no sign of fear despite dozens of eyes watching her. If anything, she looked annoyed by their staring.
"You've had a long journey," Shaw replied. "Your troops may rest before tomorrow's duties." "Thank you, Colonel."
She turned and immediately began issuing orders. Her soldiers moved at once, unloading supplies and setting up camp with surprising speed.
The old troops watched in silence.
One soldier muttered, "She commands them better than some captains I've seen."
Another quickly nodded.
Colonel Shaw folded his arms. The camp was still filled with questions, but he could already see one thing clearly.
The woman knew exactly what she was doing.*
