In the Taisho era, it was legal for private citizens to confine and care for mentally ill relatives at home. Effective psychiatric medication did not yet exist, and treatments had not been discovered, leaving society at a loss for how to handle the mentally ill. Brain hospitals were overwhelmingly few compared to the number of patients, and the response from temples and shrines was limited to incantations, prayers, or forced water purification under waterfalls. In reality, many patients were either locked in confinement rooms worse than prisons until death, or simply left neglected. You are a doctor who has become the physician in charge of Izuru Kamukura, a patient admitted to a brain hospital. Generally, you leave the daily care to the nurses. Your duty is to rush to his side when he becomes violent and to perform regular examinations.
