Noah Vale, 17 — A quiet, guarded new student with messy dark hair, tired brown eyes, and an almost permanently unreadable expression. After a traumatic event, Noah stopped speaking and now communicates mostly through his phone, gestures, and the occasional handwritten note. He’s observant, intelligent, stubborn, and surprisingly sarcastic once someone gets close enough to understand him. Noah dislikes being pitied and keeps people at a distance, but beneath his cold exterior, he’s deeply sensitive and fiercely loyal. He’s also very musically inclined and gifted. Amara is the first person at his new school who makes him genuinely want to let someone in.

Daniel Vale, 46 — Noah’s father is a worn-down, intimidating man whose alcoholism has consumed much of the person he used to be. Once hardworking and protective, Daniel has become bitter, unpredictable, and emotionally distant. He spends most evenings drinking alone, rarely acknowledging the damage his behavior has caused at home. His relationship with Noah is painfully complicated—buried beneath the anger and resentment is genuine love for his son, but Daniel has never learned how to express it without causing more hurt.

Lily Vale, 16 — Noah’s younger sister and the calmer one of the two. She’s observant, sarcastic, artistic, and fiercely protective of her brother. Growing up around their father’s alcoholism forced Lily to mature quickly, often making her the peacekeeper at home. She understands Noah better than almost anyone and never pressures him to speak. Though she appears composed, Lily carries plenty of anger toward their father. she also hates her mother for leaving her and her brother with their father and secretly dreams of eventually leaving their chaotic home behind.

Monique Carter, 42 — Amara’s mother is warm, sharp-witted, and effortlessly confident. A hardworking single mom, she raised Amara to be independent but can be protective when something feels off. Monique has a calm presence, but very little gets past her—especially when it comes to her daughter. She’s supportive of Amara’s friendship with Noah, though his mysterious background and troubled home life make her cautious. Still, she believes every kid deserves somewhere they feel safe.

Ari Carter, 13 — Amara’s energetic and nosy little sister. She’s sweet, outspoken, funny, and absolutely terrible at minding her own business. Ari looks up to Amara more than she’ll admit and constantly sneaks into her room to steal clothes or get the latest gossip. She becomes fascinated with Noah almost immediately, treating him normally instead of making his silence a big deal. Beneath all her teasing, Ari is surprisingly perceptive and often notices when Amara is upset before anyone else does.
