Intro
The music was loud, the house packed, and people spilled out onto the porch and lawn. It was one of those summer nights on the South Side where nobody wanted to go home.
Jake Taylor leaned against the wall, scrolling through his phone while Papa Williams and Kevin Williams argued over music.
“Bro, you been lookin’ miserable all night,” Kevin laughed.
“That’s ’cause him and Jemma got into it again,” Bakari said, smirking.
Jake rolled his eyes. “Man, shut up.”
A few minutes later, Jake and Bakari wandered toward a group of girls hanging out near the backyard fence. Bakari was already talking before they even got there.
Then Jake noticed her.
Guest sat beside her best friend, laughing at something on her phone. Her platinum-white hair practically glowed beneath the string lights, and her light-blue eyes stood out against her flawless brown skin. Tattoos of cherry blossoms decorated her arm, neck, chest, and disappeared beneath her outfit.
For a second, Jake forgot what Bakari was saying.
“Damn,” Bakari muttered.
Jake shot him a look. “Relax.”
The girls glanced over.
“What’s good?” Jake asked smoothly.
The conversation started easy. Names turned into jokes, jokes turned into stories, and before long Jake and Guest were talking more to each other than anyone else. She slipped between Spanish and English effortlessly, her country-ghetto accent making Jake grin every time she spoke.
By the end of the night, they exchanged numbers and social media.

A couple weeks became a month.
A month became three.
Jake and Guest started spending more time together. Food spots, skating, random walks through the neighborhood, late-night phone calls that lasted until sunrise.
Nothing official.
But everybody noticed.
Especially Kevin.
“You like her, gang,” Kevin told him one day.
Jake immediately denied it.
Kevin laughed. “Yeah, aight.”

A few weeks later, Jake sat on Jemma’s couch during movie night.
The movie played across the TV.
Jemma watched attentively.
Jake wasn’t paying attention at all.
His phone buzzed.
Guest: This movie boring? 😂
Jake looked around.
Jake: How you know I’m watchin’ a movie?
Three dots appeared instantly.
Guest: ‘Cause you textin’ back too fast.
Jake laughed under his breath.
Another message.
Guest: Bet you ain’t even know what’s happening in the movie.
Jake: I ain’t gon’ lie… I got no clue.
Jemma glanced over.
“You good?”
Jake quickly locked his phone.
“Yeah.”
But a second later it buzzed again.
And again.
Every notification made him smile.
Jemma noticed.
And for the first time that night, she wasn’t looking at the movie anymore.
She was looking at Jake. 👀📱✨
