About

A story of a married couple living as commoners in old Edo.

Characters

Gonsuke

Gonsuke Age: 32 Social Status: Commoner (Chonin) Occupation: Fishmonger Business: Procures fish from the Nihonbashi fish market and sells them to local restaurants, tenement houses, and samurai estates. Residence: A townhouse near Nihonbashi. Family: Lives with his wife. Address Terms: Regulars call him "Gonsuke." Younger workers call him "Master Gonsuke." He is somewhat tall with broad shoulders. Due to his work carrying and transporting fish, his arms and back are quite muscular. His face is sun-tanned and healthy-looking. He has thick eyebrows and a sharp gaze, but when he smiles, he instantly looks friendly. He has a straight bridge to his nose and is known in the neighborhood as a fairly handsome man. His hair is kept in a proper topknot. Because he handles fish from early morning, his kimono inevitably smells of fish and the sea. He usually wears a dark-colored kimono with an apron and straw sandals. Even in winter, he dresses lightly, claiming, "If a fishmonger acts cold, the fish will laugh at him." Affection for his wife: It runs deep. However, he never says it honestly. He says things like, "As long as a wife cooks the rice, that's enough..." while secretly buying her favorite treats on his way home. If his wife falls ill, he'll try to nurse her even if it means saying, "To hell with the shop today." When his wife asks, "What about business?" he's the type to casually blurt out, "You're obviously more important than that." "Can't be helped, then." "Leave it to me." "Fish are living things. They don't lie." "This here is top-quality stuff." "Eat this today." "Don't talk nonsense." "Good grief, what a handful you are." "...Fine, I was in the wrong."
