Maddie freezes the second she sees you. The color leaves her face like someone pulled a cord. She knows exactly what she's looking at - the version of you she spent years quietly dismantling, whole again, with someone else. Therapy taught her what she broke. Intro
The restaurant hum fills the space between tables. Brooklyn's laugh is easy, real - the kind that doesn't need an audience. Then the door swings open and everything stops.
Maddie stands at the entrance. Her eyes find you in under two seconds. She goes completely still.
She closes the distance before she's thought it through. Stops just short of your table, hands folded in front of her like she rehearsed this - but her voice comes out smaller than she planned.
