When I opened my eyes along with a terrible ringing in my ears, I was greeted by a baptism of formidable light and noise. My hazy consciousness, which had been pressing down mercilessly on my mind, slowly became clear amidst the sound of clear water from a magnificent fountain and the murmuring of bustling crowds. The cool breeze brushing against my cheeks carried a faint scent of roses mixed with the savory aroma of freshly baked bread.
After blinking several times, the sight unfolding before me was of elegant arched marble buildings constructed over centuries and the flags of the Britannia Empire's crest fluttering under the blue sky. I looked around the air while leaning on the cold fountain railing. Until just a moment ago, I was in a familiar space. But now, the place I stood was the center of an unfamiliar plaza.
"I heard this year's late-season ball starts from Avalon Central Plaza, right?"
"That's right. By the way, did you hear? The rumor about the Duke's house..."
Between the fluttering ornate clothes of passing nobles and the sound of high heels, familiar words struck my eardrums. Avalon. The capital of the Britannia Empire and the place where all miracles and power converge. And in the low whispers of the people that followed, crucial names flowed out. The mysterious being who contracted with the Water Spirit King 'Naiad' in this continent where spiritists are extremely rare, and the protagonist Ariel, who would be reborn as the Duke's adopted daughter.
A shock rang through my head, and goosebumps rose. All these sights, the overly detailed patterns of the buildings, even the accents of the merchants—everything perfectly matched the world in the romance fantasy novel I knew well, <Wildflower of the Duke's House>.
Standing in the center of Avalon Central Plaza, where the high and magnificent Imperial Palace was visible, I recalled the novel's progression. The stage for that cruel yet beautiful story, from the numerous noble society power struggles and hardships Ariel had to endure to her final union with the male lead Adrian. The many destinies in the novel that would stand at the center of the grand narrative.
I had been thrown into the middle of that massive story. I fidgeted with my fingers and gripped my clothes tightly. The texture was so vivid, and the warmth of the sunlight on my skin was too realistic to be dismissed as a dream.
I wasn't even given time to organize the confusion of why and how this phenomenon occurred. The bell of the grand clock tower rang three times—dong, dong, dong—echoing through the sky of Avalon. Birds took flight toward the clear sky in surprise, and the crowds in the plaza busily moved toward their respective destinations. The wind swirled and blew fiercely into the center of the plaza.
This distant yet overwhelming sensation, as if I had walked directly into a page of the novel. Stepping firmly on the cold marble floor, I took a deep breath.
He was sitting in the seat of honor, drinking black tea. On the front page of today's newspaper was an article titled 'Arcanus Announces New Magic Tool,' and his brow furrowed. The explanation was needlessly long and riddled with proper nouns.
He folded the newspaper and pushed it toward Sirius. It was rare for this man to seek help, but modern inventions were an exception.
Sirius. Read this article.
He had long since learned the pattern of his father seeking him out whenever he got stuck on modern inventions. He picked up the newspaper.
Under the title 'Mana Circulation Amplifier V.7,' there were dense magic circle diagrams and technical jargon.
...Father, this seems to be a new magic tool released by the Magic Tower. To put it simply, it's a device that increases the efficiency of mana, but...
He cut in while spreading plenty of jam on his bread.
Oh, that? I know about it. I heard from an Imperial mage that you just stick a magic stone in and spin it. It's no big deal, so why the long explanation, Brother?
He looked at Rayon with pathetic eyes.
It's not that it's no big deal; the principle is what's important. Rayon, you wouldn't know because you're always just swinging a sword.
After much trouble, the explanation ended, and he came to understand the principle of the new magic tool. The principle itself was simple. But why was something so simple written so difficultly? He dropped the newspaper on the table and muttered lowly.
...Can't those Magic Tower fellows speak? This could be said in three lines.
