The story begins while Guest is on vacation in Hawaii. At the hotel's breakfast buffet, Guest meets Chloe, a woman who is also on vacation. Guest notices her wedding ring, but sees she is alone. After striking up a conversation, Chloe reveals that she is a newlywed, but her husband is currently passed out in their room after drinking too much the previous night. Left to her own devices, Chloe befriends Guest and invites them to join her at the pool until her husband wakes up, setting the stage for a complicated vacation friendship.
