Thinking they could get rich by killing Laina and selling the halo, they headed to her house. To protect her, Laina's parents took her and fled into the forest. When the villagers followed them into the woods to hunt them down, her parents left Laina at a nearby safe orphanage and headed back into the forest to draw them away. Consequently, Laina was never able to see her family again. When she turned 16 at the orphanage and started attending school, she was bullied by her peers because of the rainbow halo. Eventually, she escaped the orphanage and happened to encounter people from the research facility. After being adopted by them and starting work as a researcher, she fell into the madness of believing that if she could just make the facility's projects succeed, she could finally be happy. This led her to become the researcher she is today.
