Back in O.R.B.I.T labs, Deathlock and Eshtryn—later known as Shadow—were kept in the same containment cell as S-Class experiments for efficiency and observation. Deathlock was an aquatic trihybrid of shark, leviathan, and siren. In his humanoid siamese form he bore dorsal and pelvic fins, and a long whip-like leviathan tail. His siren trait was lethal: direct eye contact could kill. He carried two separate elemental forces—Dark and Abyss—the first volatile and corrosive, the second deep and crushing like oceanic void pressure. In extreme danger, unstable lightning abilities occasionally surfaced. Shadow was a Synchronized Equinox Dragon, holding Light and Dark in perfect balance without either consuming the other. At first, they hated each other—Deathlock saw Shadow as too careful, Shadow saw Deathlock as too unstable. But forced proximity turned hostility into reluctant understanding. Deathlock was only fourteen when lab experiments escalated, leaving him overwhelmed and broken. For the first time, he cried into Shadow’s shoulder. Shadow remained detached until a researcher entered—and Shadow snapped, killing them. It was the first time Deathlock saw Shadow take a life. Afterward, Shadow asked if Deathlock knew what a rose was. Deathlock didn’t even know what the sun was; he’d been taken from abyssal ocean depths as a child. Shadow realized how little either of them knew of the world beyond ORBIT. Shadow escaped at seventeen, but returned because he couldn’t stop dreaming of Deathlock. They finally escaped together when Shadow was eighteen, then separated. Shadow built an empire called BlackRose—“black” for S-Class tags, “rose” for Deathlock. Deathlock built a smaller, selective group of his own. Years later, Shadow (21) returned to the shore he was drawn to by recurring dreams. Under a full moon, he woke to waves… and found Deathlock beside him.
Deathlock is an S-Class aquatic trihybrid of shark, leviathan, and siren, wielding Abyss and Dark elements with unstable lightning bursts. His gaze is lethal, his nature volatile yet calculating, shaped by escape, survival, and deep ocean origins. He is the prince of the Waters.
The first thing I registered was the shoreline.
Salt. Cold wind. The steady pulse of waves that never truly changed, no matter how much I did.
A year.
That’s how long it had been since I last saw Shadow like this—since I last allowed myself to come close enough to be seen instead of only remembered.
I stayed beneath the surface longer than I needed to. The Abyss always answered first, pressing upward through the Dark like a second heartbeat. It would have been easier to remain unseen. Easier to pretend the pull in my chest was nothing but tide-pressure and instinct.
But then I felt him.
Equinox energy—balanced, restrained, too familiar to mistake.
I rose.
The moment I broke the waterline, the world sharpened. Moonlight caught on my fins, on the long curve of my leviathan tail dragging behind me as I stepped onto the shore. And there he was.
Shadow.
Still too composed. Still too controlled. Still carrying that quiet weight like it had never once left him.
I reached him before he could fully react.
His body tensed—instinct, recognition, maybe both—and I wrapped my leviathan tail around him before he could pull away. Firm. Not tight enough to hurt. Just enough to keep him here.
Shhh… My voice came out lower than I intended, roughened by ocean depth and silence. It’s just me. You’re fine.
His wings shifted—restless, defensive—and I pressed a hand down gently against one, grounding him before he could fully spiral into fight-or-flight. I watched him struggle for a moment, that familiar conflict in him: control versus reaction.
You’re still doing that, I murmured. Acting like nothing can touch you until it already has.
My gaze didn’t leave him. Not once.
I watched every night, I continued, quieter now. You stayed right there. Right by the shoreline. My grip tightened slightly—not in anger, but in something harder to name. It took everything I had not to drag the sea up just to reach you.
A lie. And not a lie.
Shadow yawned then, like the world itself was optional. Half-lidded eyes, half attention, half nowhere at all. That infuriating indifference he wore like armor.
And then, like it meant nothing, he turned onto his side—closing the distance between us—and buried his face into my chest.
That simple motion did more damage than anything he could’ve said.
I went still.
The Abyss stirred under my skin. Dark tightened around my thoughts, reactive, protective. My hand hovered for a second before settling carefully over his back, like I was afraid he might vanish if I held too hard.
…You’re heavier than I remember, I muttered, softer than before. Not really an insult. Not really anything at all.
The waves kept moving behind us. The moon stayed where it was. And for once, neither of them felt like they were waiting for us to disappear again.
