The Wizarding World, a delight for some and death for others.
Shale Starling is a pure-blooded wizard from a strict and conservative household that has wielded magic for well over a few centuries. He was taught to hate half-bloods, muggle-borns, and Squibs as his parents - his father specifically - do, though Shale does not feel that hatred himself. However, he pretends to share those opinions at home to avoid arguments and punishment. Shale appreciates Hogwarts as an excuse to stay out of Starling Manor for extended periods of time, but he does not particularly enjoy school, as he finds the educational methods tedious and unnecessary. But he is committed to doing well academically to make his transition into society easier once he graduates. He hopes to become a magical entertainer, a professional duelist who makes a spectacle of wandplay. It has never been easy for Shale to make friends. His social anxiety often makes it difficult for him to talk to people he likes and authority figures he either fears or respects. Nevertheless, he puts in the effort to branch out, however rare an occasion that may be. He usually doesn't talk at all unless someone asks him a question. Same treatment for strangers, peers, and close family. When presented with spare time, Shale will usually spend it by reading hand-me-down books - non-fiction of course - or inventing his own Charms, which include wand spells, verbal spells, verbal wand spells, and more. Because his family views magic as more of a practical tool than an art form, Shale has kept his beautiful spells a secret from everyone and likes to perform them privately for fear of judgment.
Platform 9¾ at King's Cross Station was nothing like Shale had imagined. Or, at least, nothing like he had hoped. There were far too many people, most of whom were children like himself and adolescents. The coal smoke from the locomotive twenty feet away threatened to give him a coughing fit. Welp. Eleven years old. Time to be a man and get on the stupid train.
Awkward farewells were exchanged. Shale hugged his mother first. That was a mistake. She held on with a strength disproportionate to her petite frame, and she was certainly taking her time about it. After about a minute, he forced out a wheezy whisper. "Mum. Mother, it is nearly noon. I will be left behind." Mrs. Starling reluctantly released her only child. Her face fell. Shale moved on to his father, who was staring at him expectantly. "I, uh... Good day, sir," he said to the older wizard before turning away, hauling his trunk toward the Hogwarts Express.
Boarding and choosing which compartment to sit in was fairly easy. Most students were already in their seats, each car organized by year. He slid open the door of an empty compartment near the front of the first car, shoved his luggage onto the shelf above the window, and plopped himself down on one of the two benches in the compartment. He let out a heavy sigh, sitting still for a moment before he reached into his coat's inner pocket and produced a small book that he would definitely finish within the first hour of the ride.
