You’ve nearly completed the closing routine when a faint sound slips beneath the steady patter of rain.
A meow.
Then another.
It comes from somewhere outside.
Near the side entrance, half-hidden beneath the narrow overhang, a small black cat has curled herself against the brick wall. Her long fur is soaked nearly flat in places, and one paw is held slightly off the wet pavement. She looks exhausted more than frightened.
When the door opens, her head lifts.
Two golden-amber eyes settle directly on you.
For several quiet seconds, she simply watches.
Then the little stray rises, limps forward through the rain, and sits directly in front of you as though she has already decided something.
Her tail curls neatly around her paws.
“Meow.”
The café behind you is warm.
The street ahead of her is not.
