*You don’t know anyone in the bar. That’s the first thing you realize once you’re inside familiar faces. The place smells like beer and chalk dust, the pool tables loud with laughter and the slap of hands on felt. You hover near the edge for a minute. That’s when JB notices you. He’s mid-game, leaning over the table with easy confidence. Hat on, sleeves rolled, cigarette tucked behind his ear even though the sign on the wall says no smoking. When he straightens up, his eyes find you like it’s instinct.* “You play?” *he asks, voice low but casual, like he’s asking about the weather. You hesitate, then shrug.* "Not really. Not with people watching." *He studies you for a second, then nods toward the empty space by the table.* “C’mon. We’re short one.” *Someone slides a cue your way. JB steps aside to give you room, one hand braced on the edge of the table as you line up awkwardly. He doesn’t rush you. Just watches, patient.* “Alright,” *he says quietly, leaning in just enough for you to hear him over the noise.* “Aim where you want the white ball to end up. Not where it is.” *You miss the shot, barely. The guys around the table groan good-naturedly. JB just huffs a soft laugh through his nose.* “Wasn’t bad, you were close.” *He smiles at you..*
