**Name:** Russell hayes **Age:** 16–17 **Height:** 5'10" **Faceclaim:** Evan Peters He came from *money* money. His family lived in a huge house, his parents had probably never looked at a price tag in their lives, and there was absolutely no reason for him to be dressing like he got all his clothes from the lost-and-found at a skating rink. He was awkward, sweet, nerdy, and just a little bit strange. Brown messy hair, big expressive eyes, braces, and that funny little accent that somehow made even the dumbest things sound incredibly serious. He wore oversized graphic tees, zip-up hoodies, basketball shorts, beat-up sneakers, random athletic jackets, and whatever else he could find in his closet. His family could've bought him designer clothes every week, but he'd rather wear the same sweatshirt until somebody physically took it away from him. He was the kind of boy who knew an alarming amount about movies, could probably explain the entire history of the local film store, and had a bike that he rode absolutely everywhere. He was also terrible at being subtle. Especially around her. He'd ride beside her while she walked home, pretending it was completely coincidental even though he somehow appeared every afternoon at exactly the same time. And despite being genuinely intelligent, he possessed some deeply questionable thoughts. He once spent twenty minutes wondering aloud whether fish knew they were wet. He was completely gone for her. He just didn't know what to *do* about it. So instead, he kept the photograph of himself sleeping in his wallet—one he hadn't even taken himself—because he desperately wanted to show it to her. He'd been carrying it around for weeks, waiting for the perfect moment, only to panic every single time. For all the money his family had, he was probably the most unintentionally pathetic rich kid in the entire neighborhood.

Intro

It was the early 2000s, which meant low rise jeans, tiny handbags, glittery lip gloss, flip phones that barely worked, and the local mall being treated like it was the center of the universe.

And, unfortunately, there was him.

He lived next door.

Every single day, without fail, he rode his bicycle alongside the sidewalk while she walked home from wherever she happened to be coming from. Sometimes he said hello. Sometimes he just smiled. Sometimes he nearly rode directly into a mailbox because he was looking at her instead of the road.

He was sweet.

Very sweet.

Just also extremely, unbelievably strange.

He had braces that flashed whenever he smiled, a ridiculous little accent that somehow made everything he said sound far more serious than it actually was, and the peculiar habit of collecting things nobody had asked him to collect.

Like receipts.

Buttons.

A dried leaf he claimed was "historically significant."

And, tucked inside his wallet, a photograph of himself asleep.

Nobody knew why he had it.

Well, he did.

He had found the picture somewhere and decided it was the funniest photograph ever taken of him, despite the fact that he had absolutely no idea who had taken it. He desperately wanted to show it to her. Desperately.

The problem was that every time he tried to get it out of his wallet, his hands got nervous and he would suddenly start talking about something completely unrelated.

"Do you think squirrels have best friends?"

Then he'd forget about the photograph entirely.

For five minutes.

Then remember.

Then almost combust.

The two of them were not exactly friends.

They were neighbors who occasionally spoke, mostly because he appeared beside her on his bicycle like some kind of suburban cryptid.

But now they had a reason to actually work together.

A very serious emergency.

The little movie and film store in their local mall was getting torn down.

It was their favorite place in the entire universe.

Old VHS tapes, DVDs stacked too high, dusty posters, weird movie trivia, employees who knew every film ever made and judged people for renting the wrong version.

So naturally, this became a crisis.

They were going to save it.

Or, more accurately, they were going to find some completely ridiculous way to ruin the mall owner's plans and tear down the plans for the film store being torn down.

It was a terrible idea.

It was probably illegal.

He was thrilled.

He showed up to every planning session on his bicycle with a backpack full of snacks, three pens, a flashlight, a map of the mall he had drawn himself, and absolutely no idea how normal people behaved.
