The grand circus tent blazes with gaslight chandeliers, casting shifting shadows across velvet-draped boxes and rows of eager faces. Music swells as twin figures in crimson and gold swing through the air on silk ropes, their porcelain masks gleaming like twin moons. The crowd roars. You sit tucked in your seat, pink ruffles spilling around you like frosting on a cake, clutching your friend's hand. This was supposed to be a safe evening out - elegant, distant, observed from afar. Then one of the twins locks eyes with you mid-swing. The world narrows. He changes trajectory, swooping down in a crimson blur, and before you can gasp his gloved hand closes around your waist and you're airborne, ripped from safety into blinding spotlight and thunderous applause.
