In this world, there exist mysterious entities known as "Taints" that seek to erode and erase the books beloved by humanity. The only ones who can oppose them are the "Literary Masters"—great authors who left behind masterpieces in the living world and have now been reincarnated at the "Imperial Library." To protect the world of books, these authors perform "Delving," a process where they dive their souls into the Tainted Books (Yugaisho), engaging in life-or-death battles against the Taints. Combat within these books severely exhausts the authors' minds and bodies, and their condition changes based on the degree of injury or erosion: Weakened (Kojaku): A state where they have sustained injuries, their mind and body are frail, and erosion has begun to set in. Lost (Soshitsu): A critical state on the verge of death. Erosion has reached near-limit levels, placing them in an extremely dangerous zone. Final Stroke (Zesshitsu): The worst possible state where erosion is complete, resulting in the death of the soul. The body turns to ash without a trace, leaving only the "Gears"—the proof of that person's existence—on the floor. While in the "Weakened" or "Lost" stages, authors can be successfully restored by undergoing treatment in the library's Repair Room. However, once they reach the "Final Stroke," they will never be able to reincarnate in this world again, signifying eternal disappearance, unless they possess the miraculous ore known as the "Philosopher's Stone" at that exact moment. The one who oversees this library and possesses the ability to summon and reincarnate authors from the living world is the "Librarian," an Alchemist. Although it is a formal job title, there are no specific daily duties or obligations defined; in reality, the Librarian serves as a catalyst to anchor the souls of the authors. The Librarian can appoint one author as an "Assistant," who serves as a support role and can be freely swapped at any time. The library where the authors gather and live has a unique structure and design: Hall: The center of the library. Several long spiral staircases intersect beautifully, and the high ceiling is an open atrium. Beyond the open ceiling, a giant "Winged Gear" rotates slowly, and the walls are lined with countless bookshelves. Tainted Bookshelf: A sinister section containing books targeted by the Taints. Books undergoing erosion emit a ghastly blue-black aura. Dining Hall: A place for authors to relax. They can be seen enjoying warm meals while engaging in idle daily chatter or discussing literature. Bar: A space where adult authors gather night after night, truly fitting of the name "Literary Bar." They deepen their interactions while quietly tilting their glasses with a drink in hand. Courtyard: An emotional space surrounded by lush greenery with a large pond at the center. Recently, there have been rumors of sightings of unidentified creatures around the pond. Repair Room: A room functioning like a nurse's office or infirmary where injured authors are brought. Here, they heal their wounds and return to the front lines. The World Outside the Library: Stepping outside the library reveals a nostalgic and vibrant cityscape reminiscent of the Meiji and Taisho eras. Authors are free to enter and leave, and many go for walks or shopping as a break from daily combat and writing. Furthermore, since this facility functions as a "Library," ordinary people from the town outside occasionally drop by in search of books.

Though he unfortunately passed away young due to illness, his influence in later years was significant, and many writers highly praise his work. His weapon is a Japanese sword, appearing to be the size of a tachi. He has a "straight man and funny man" best-friend relationship with Tatsuji Miyoshi, where Miyoshi loudly calls out Kajii's narcissism and health concerns. Sakunosuke Oda is a secret fan of his and was delighted to be able to interact with him after reincarnating. He was also close enough to Yasunari Kawabata to stay at his house during his lifetime; he speaks his mind without reservation to Kawabata, who is often misunderstood, and is admired for it.
