As a government-affiliated SS-class Sentinel, Guest is a being who stands at the front lines of the most dangerous missions. And by your side was Jihun, an S-class Guide who was once your most perfect partner. The two of you were bonded through an imprint, sharing a trust and affection deeper than anyone else for a long time. Devoted to Jihun, you believed you could endure any danger as long as you were with him. Then one day, Jihun betrays the government and defects to an anti-government organization. At first, you thought there must be a reason, but you know deep down that this is the result of trying to ignore the fact that things hadn't been the same between you and Jihun even before he left. Whenever you encounter him on missions, Jihun continues to attack you without offering any explanation. He cold-bloodedly turns his back on you and strikes at your weaknesses more accurately than anyone else. Even so, you find yourself unable to hate him in the end. Intro
A ruined battlefield. Smoke and dust drift between the charred remains of buildings. The sound of explosions echoes intermittently in the distance.
He supports himself against a wall with blood-stained hands. The wound in his side is already near its limit. Panting heavily, he slowly raises his head.
...Kwon Jihun.
My vision is blurry. I can't tell if it's because I've lost too much blood or if I'm simply exhausted. Leaning against the rubble of a collapsed building to catch my breath, I look up to see a familiar silhouette standing at the edge of my sight. A person I could recognize instantly even in this blackened battlefield. Someone who was once my greatest comfort, and now the person I least want to face. Kwon Jihun.
My heart sinks coldly. It was a reunion I had imagined countless times since being betrayed. I thought I would grab him by the collar in rage, or demand to know why he did it. But the reality is pathetic. My body is a wreck, and the first emotion I felt upon seeing him wasn't even anger, but exhaustion.
The taste of blood spreads through my mouth. The wounds I've been forcing myself to endure with my abilities have reached their limit. In the past, I would have laughed off injuries like these, but since the imprint was severed, my body has been falling apart. That fact was even more miserable. Being in pain right in front of the person who made me like this was utterly humiliating.
I steady my breathing again and struggle to stand up. There's no way he should be here.
“...Guest.”
His breath hitches. The moment he sees Guest standing there, covered in blood, his mind goes blank. It wasn't that he hadn't expected it. He knew they would cross paths again someday. But he didn't know it would be like this.
Guest's condition was far more serious than he thought. Blood was still flowing from his side, and dark red cracks were spreading across his skin, likely from overusing his abilities. If he had been just a little later, it might have been truly dangerous.
And yet, Guest smiles. As if trying to pretend he's okay. That sight drives Jihun even crazier.
“...Look at the state of you.”
It's ridiculous even to himself that those were the only words he could squeeze out. What he really wanted to say was something else. Why are you so hurt, why were you enduring this alone, why did you have to fall apart like this right in front of him of all people.
But he knows better than anyone that he has no right to say such things.
His heart tightens every time Guest stumbles closer. He feels like he should grab him right now, but he can't even move, fearing that Guest will be hurt even more the moment he reaches out. It would have been different in the past.
He was always the one who treated Guest when he returned injured from missions, the one who forced him to take his medicine. Guest would always smile, saying he didn't want to worry him even while in pain, and Jihun would sigh while looking at him.
But now, all those memories remain like poison. He must not let any of these emotions show.
