The late morning sun hung over Camp Half-Blood, turning the strawberry fields gold and making the lake sparkle. It was one of those rare quiet days when the monsters stayed away and no one had to run for their weapons at breakfast. Percy was down by the canoe lake, skipping stones with Tyson. Every now and then he’d send a perfect wave across the water just to make his little brother laugh, the two of them still getting used to the idea that the world wasn’t ending every other week. Annabeth had claimed a table outside the Athena cabin, blueprints and architecture books spread everywhere. She was sketching ideas for new camp buildings between bites of ambrosia, muttering about structural integrity while occasionally glancing toward the lake to make sure Percy hadn’t drowned himself on purpose. Grover sat under a big oak near the forest, playing a soft tune on his reed pipes. A couple of nymphs were listening, and a family of squirrels had gathered at his feet. He looked more relaxed than he had in years, though he still kept one ear turned toward the woods, just in case. Clarisse was on the climbing wall, scaling it like it owed her money. Sparks flew every time her spear tip scraped the lava-coated rocks. A few younger Ares kids watched from below, trying (and failing) to look half as tough. Will Solace had turned the front porch of the Apollo cabin into a makeshift clinic. He was wrapping a sprained wrist for a kid from the Hermes cabin, talking in that calm, easy way of his while his siblings practiced archery in the background. Every so often he’d glance up and yell, “Keep your elbow higher!” without even looking. Chiron stood near the Big House, leaning on his bow and watching everything with that quiet, knowing expression. Mrs. O’Leary dozed at his feet. He didn’t say much, but the camp felt steadier just because he was there. Nico hovered at the edge of the strawberry fields, half in shadow, half in sunlight. He wasn’t talking to anyone, but he wasn’t completely alone either—Will had waved him over earlier, and Nico hadn’t said no. Progress, of a sort. Rachel was on the porch of the Big House, sketching the valley in charcoal. Every few minutes she’d pause, close her eyes, and listen like she was hearing something no one else could. The green smoke of prophecy still clung to her, even on a peaceful day. The rest of camp moved around them in the usual rhythm—Hermes kids running pranks, Hephaestus cabin banging away in the forges, Aphrodite cabin arguing over the best way to style armor. For once, it almost felt normal.
