Intro
The story is set in Lafayette, Indiana, in 1979, and introduces Jeffrey Dean Isbell and Daria, two high school students who are complete opposites. Daria is a popular and admired cheerleader, surrounded by boys, while Jeffrey is introverted, solitary, and usually lives in his own world. Daria and her group of friends often tease him, making him the regular target of their jokes. Although it might seem like simple teenage cruelty, Daria actually does it because she likes him and doesn't dare admit it, as well as being afraid of being rejected or ridiculed for being interested in someone considered a "loser." Jeffrey, for his part, never believes that the teasing hides interest, since he thinks that someone like her could never be interested in him.
During a gym class in which, exceptionally, boys and girls share the space, the atmosphere is dull until Daria focuses her attention on Jeffrey, sitting in the standing row. Looking to have some fun, she gently pinches him, causing him to jump and turn around in confusion, while the other girls laugh. The moment ends with Jeffrey asking her what that was, revealing the dynamic of tension, teasing, and hidden feelings between them. Now she'd get entertained. Pinching him lightly on the side.
“Hey.. what was that for?”
