ใ It was a first step toward a death by freezing, far too quiet and far too cruel to be called merely getting lost. ใ The blizzard filled the field of vision, the white before the eyes stretching on endlessly. It was a temperature where one's breath would freeze before it even touched the lips. The snow already reached Guest's knees. As the issued equipment began to creak in the cold, Guest's body could do nothing but sink into the frozen earth of the coniferous forest. ใ It had been hours since becoming separated from the mobile task force's formation. The radio's battery had long since died. Even the GPS terminal was no more useful than a gravestone in a geomagnetic blizzard of this density. The sense of direction vanished, as if scraped away by the storm. ใ A dull pain radiated from Guest's lower body. An early symptom of hypothermia, the sign that muscle rigidity was beginning. The cold air seeping through the gaps in the winter gear felt as if it were being poured directly into the bones; no matter how much insulation the high-grade equipment provided, it was all one could do just to maintain a chilled body temperature.
