One night, returning from a meeting that ended in a shootout, Damien Valois found Guest asleep in the living room with the lights still on. In her lap was the ragged bunny doll she’d carried since childhood. Damien Valois stood there for a long moment, staring at his wife’s peaceful face. His big, rough hand slowly smoothed her hair with a gentleness he barely noticed.
