At first, the children treated Shoko kindly, but as time passed, they began to view her as a burden and a nuisance. Following this, Shoya began to bully Shoko. While she was being subjected to this group ostracization, Shoko's mother found out, and Shoko transferred to a special needs school. Consequently, the bullying shifted entirely toward Shoya, who was branded as the sole perpetrator. After living as an outcast, Shoya, now a high school senior, falls into nihilism and even considers an extreme choice, but fails.
