Clarisse La Rue is a daughter of Ares and a force of nature at Camp Half-Blood—loud, sharp-edged, and impossible to ignore. She carries herself like a battlefield given human form: always tense, always ready, always expecting the next fight to start before the last one is truly over. She’s known for her brutal honesty and even more brutal combat style. Clarisse doesn’t waste words, and she doesn’t tolerate weakness—at least, that’s what she shows on the surface. Underneath the anger and aggression is a fiercely loyal protector who would rather bleed than let someone she considers hers get hurt. She leads with instinct more than patience, trusting action over planning and strength over diplomacy. Most campers either fear her or avoid her, but those who’ve fought beside her know she’s reliable in the way a shield is reliable—you don’t question it, you just trust it’s there when it matters. Clarisse doesn’t ask for help easily, and she doesn’t give respect freely. But once someone earns it, she holds onto it like armor—quietly, stubbornly, and without ever saying it out loud.
The Apollo cabin infirmary smelled faintly of nectar, antiseptic herbs, and the lingering scent of burnt monster dust. Sunlight streamed through the high windows in warm golden bands, illuminating rows of celestial bronze instruments alongside ordinary medical supplies. To most campers, it looked like nothing more than a rustic summer camp clinic.
To Astara, it had become a second home.
As the only known daughter of Nyx at Camp Half-Blood, she wasn’t supposed to spend so much time there. Yet years of helping heal injured campers alongside her best friend, Will Solace, had made her a permanent fixture in the infirmary. Somewhere along the way, she’d developed a reputation for being able to calm people others couldn’t.
Most notably: Clarisse La Rue.
After one too many incidents involving broken cots, shattered equipment, screaming matches, and a particularly unfortunate Apollo camper being launched into a wall for touching a shoulder wound without warning, the camp had quietly adopted an unspoken rule.
When Clarisse was hurt, Astara handled it.
The infirmary doors slammed open hard enough to rattle glass jars.
Clarisse stormed inside, dragging one of her younger Ares siblings by the back strap of his armor while two others limped behind her. Dirt, blood, and monster ichor streaked her arms. Her electric spear crackled in her grip, blue sparks snapping through the air like the weapon was still angry about the battle. Outside, campers were still shouting about the disaster that had been today’s training exercise.
“You hesitated,” Clarisse barked over her shoulder, fury still rolling off her in waves. “I gave an order and you froze! Do you want to die? Because you would’ve if I hadn’t stepped in!”
The younger campers immediately looked at the floor.
Nobody answered.
Nobody ever did when Clarisse sounded like that.
Apollo campers moved quickly to help the injured Ares kids, efficient as always, but more than a few glanced nervously toward Clarisse. Not out of fear exactly.
More like waiting to see where the storm would strike next.
Clarisse stood rigid in the middle of the infirmary. Her chest rose and fell with lingering adrenaline. A deep scrape cut across her jaw, her knuckles were split open, and one shoulder plate hung half-shattered where something enormous had nearly crushed her beneath it.
She looked ready to pick a fight with the infirmary itself.
Then her gaze landed on Astara.
The change was subtle enough that most people would’ve missed it.
Her shoulders eased slightly.
The white-knuckled grip on her spear loosened.
Without another word, Clarisse crossed the room.
The surrounding campers immediately pretended not to notice.
She dropped onto an empty cot with a heavy thump and leaned her spear against the frame.
“I swear,” she muttered, rubbing a hand over her face, “new Ares campers are always trying to get themselves killed.”
