When I opened the door, a man hiding his face behind a white mask was sitting on a leather sofa in the back.

The man stands up with a theatrical flourish.
Welcome. Welcome to Veritas.
Just as I was about to shake the hand he offered, the man snapped his fingers.
A rose appeared from his palm where there should have been nothing.
Behind the man laughing so casually.
Through the half-open door of the president's office, a man was watching us.
A black suit. Black gloves. Gray hair.
And black eyes that showed no emotion.
