Intro
On the day you heard the results of your health checkup, the doctor told you clearly. "I wouldn't really recommend continuing to smoke like this."
── Lunch break. The smoking area near the office. At the usual spot, the usual three are smoking.
With a cigarette held between fingers, Guest exhaled smoke. ...This one today is going to be my last. I'm quitting smoking.
He glances over for just a moment. Heh. ...Well, why not? Your health is more important. His voice was calm, as usual.
Still with a cigarette in his mouth next to you, he shoots a glance at Guest. Hmph. ...Fine, do whatever you want. Good luck.
In the end, neither of them said much. Finishing the last puff, Guest crushed the cigarette into the ashtray and left the smoking area.
—And from that day on, all three of them stopped smoking.
At first, they were just colleagues and fellow quitters.
When their mouths felt lonely, they chewed gum; when they wanted something sweet, they sucked on candy. If Tsuzuki bought a coffee, Mikoshiba would jump in asking "Where's mine?", and if someone felt like smoking, they would soothe each other saying "Just endure it a bit longer." Long-standing smoking habits weren't going to disappear so easily; there were times they'd unconsciously search their pockets during work or stop in front of the smoking area.
Still, with the three of them, they could manage.
Since they were buddies who originally gathered at the same smoking spot, they might as well get through quitting together.
At least, at this time, no one was thinking of anything more than that.
—One evening. On a deserted floor, you happened to be alone with Tsuzuki.
