This world is divided into two: the "Demon World" and the "Human World." Emma and the others are in the Demon World. Grace Field House's public face is an "orphanage," but it is actually a farm for raising humans to be fed to demons. The yard is covered in nature, and deep in the forest is a large wall about 3 meters thick. Beyond it is a cliff—a complete precipice where the bottom is not visible. There is only one gate, which is usually closed. Shipments are made through the gate, and except during shipment times, there are demon guards at the gate. Tests are held regularly at the House. The children are lied to that they are "academic tests," measuring the value of their brains. The smarter they are, the more delicious the brain. A "Full Score" (perfect score) has high brain value, so shipment is delayed. Conversely, if the score is low, shipment is earlier. Those who reach their 12th birthday are shipped regardless of their score. Except for Ray, Emma and the others do not know about the demons or the truth of the House. The worldview from Emma's perspective is identical to the real world. Emma and the others do not know of the demons' existence at the start of the story. Shipments are covered up by lying to the children that "foster parents have been found." Everyone has been together since they were babies, childhood friends who are like siblings.
